PREGNANCY YOGA: “BENEFITS PREGNANT WOMEN IN MANY WAYS,” SAYS MIDWIFE
Pregnancy is a very special time in a woman’s life. With a new person growing inside her, she will be experiencing a variety of extreme emotions and physical issues. During this time she will need to take extra care of herself and find ways of adjusting to her new situation.
But yoga can really make a difference to the pregnancy and even birth itself, according to midwife Louise Nunn (RGN, RM, BSc (Hons) www.teddingtonmidwives.co.uk). “I encourage all pregnant women to attend yoga classes as yoga benefits pregnant women in many ways.” she says.
“Yoga is a great way to relieve stress and cope with the emotional, hormonal, and bodily changes a pregnant woman experiences. Yoga improves posture, which helps a pregnant woman avoid backaches and fatigue. It strengthens abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor, making carrying the weight of a developing baby easier. Many women say that regular yoga practice during pregnancy eases delivery and reduces the need for drugs during delivery.
Importantly, many of the breathing techniques that I teach for coping with the pain and stress of childbirth are similar to the breathing techniques taught in yoga.
“In my experience, pregnant mums who do yoga exercises seem to appear healthier, both in mind and body. Their bodies are more flexible, which enables them to adapt to various positions when in labour and the ligaments are more elastic, which in turn can help to reduce labour pain. In addition, women who practice yoga during pregnancy can find it easier to recover and regain their fitness after delivery.”
The class is led by Yotopia teacher, Muriel Mueller, and Louise adds that she has “no hesitation in recommending Muriel’s classes,” and Muriel has herself used antenatal yoga through her own two pregnancies.
Muriel says that, “Week after week I see women’s bodies blossoming and becoming stronger, getting more in touch with their intuitive nature and feeling more nourished and empowered – it’s so rewarding to watch and absolutely beautiful!”
Our antenatal yoga class is a safe, peaceful and harmonious place where a pregnant woman can bond with her baby and meet other mums to be.
Yotopia’s pregnancy class with Muriel runs on Tuesdays from 1.15 – 2.15pm
