Shamita Ray trained as a dancer, specialising in ballet, contemporary dance, and bharatanatyam (Indian classical dance).
She initially studied Iyengar yoga, which she found beneficial in developing flexibility, and complementing dance training. A chance wandering into an Ashtanga class one day turned what was until then, a mere hobby, into a lifelong passion, rivalling her love for dance. She went on to study both in India and in the UK, with international teachers including Sharath Rangaswamy and David Swenson.
Most recently, she studied with Lara Baumann in the Quantum method, which incorporates Ayurvedic principles to create an optimal holistic practice. She currently teaches Vinyasa Flow classes that combine the precision and alignment of Iyengar, with the breath and dynamism of Ashtanga.
She enjoys being creative in her classes, playfully using her background as a dancer to choreograph imaginative sequences that move seamlessly from one posture to another, in a dance-like flow of breath and movement. She specialises in teaching children and adults, and has a CRB Disclosure and Public Liability insurance. She has 500 hour Yoga Alliance teaching certification.
